IMPRESSMENT OF RIFLES
POLICE PREPARE NOTICES RESPONSIBILITY OF PUBLIC Notices to about 1000 owners of .303 rifles will he posted by the Auckland police on Monday, calling upon them to hand in their rifles at the nearest police station on or before May 15. All rifles, whether registered or not, serviceable or otherwise, and whether owned by the holder or merely held on behalf of some other person, must be surrendered. The impressment orders have been issued under the Emergency Reserve Corps Regulations. The Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, pointed out recently that failure to receive a notice did not exonerate a person from handing in his rifle. He said provision would be made to grant persons who could satisfy the Minister that they urgently needed their rifles permission to retain them until further notice.
