White Horses Play

HEAR ANNE SHIRLEY,—Summer has given way to early autumn and in the orchards the fruit is turning ripe. Tho laden apple boughs bow down under the weight of the delicious fruit, while impatient fingers clutch at tho apples and strong teeth bite deeply into tho crisp, white flesh. Unfortunately, the promise of the peach trees in early spring was not fulfilled, and wo canto back emptyhanded from them. I have been by tho sea to-day, lying on tho warm, white sand, looking at tho ''white horses" playing on the peak of the walls of green water, watching the clouds sail leisurely by, dreaming of what lay beyond them; witnessing several late swimmers enjoying tho tumbling surf, and hearing tho thunder and boom of the great waves breaking on tho sand. Quite suddenly a curtain of grey, gentle rain enveloped the land, hiding the sun from view, and just as soon tho shower vanished and sunshine dried the sand again. We have three young kittens now, such lovely weo things they are too. One which has more confidence than tho rest, walks into tho kitchen as though, already, it was the privileged one.—Your sincere member, Audrey Lewis, Paengaroa.
