GREY'S AVENUE SCHEME ACQUISITION OF LAND Advice that the Cabinet had decided to proceed with the scheme for the erection of State flats in Grey's Avenue, and had arranged for tho purchase of most of the properties concerned, was received by flic City Council last night from the Director of Housing Construction. lie asked if the council would arrange as soon as possible to pay its promised contribution of £25,000 "The Prune .Minister lias given his assurance that the necessary legislation authorising the making ol the contribution and I lie raising ol the finance without taking a poll ol the ratepayers will lie submit ted for the consideration of Parliament at the first available opportunity," the letter added. "It will lie appreciated that this request cannot he complied with until the legislation authorising the making of the contribution and the raising ol the finance has been passed, and until the department satisfies (lie further conditions of the council's resolution by submitting plans of the proposed building to the council for approval," said the Mayor, Sir Krnest Davis. "It is my recommendation that, as soon as the plans have been submitted and the legislation passed, application be made to the Local Government Loans Board for authority to raise the £25,000 as a special loan, by special order. "In the meantime, the council has the satisfaction of knowing that it has inaugurated a most substantial contribution to the clearance of slum areas within the congested part of the city." The Mayor's suggestion was adopted bv the council.,
