COLLAPSE OF BRIDGE
MOTORISTS' ESCAPE
SAFELY OVER BEFORE CRASH (0.C.) PALMERSTON NORTH, Tuesday
Three occupants of a Hawera car travelling between Dannevirke and Woodville late last night had an alarming experience when a bridge about a mile the other side of Woodville collapsed just after they crossed it. The travellers crossed the bridge at about 10 p.m. going toward Dannevirke. and on their return journey an hour later they felt the structure tilting under them. They got safely over, but realising that the bridge was on the point of collapse they shouted a warning to a following car, which was able to pull up with the front wheels touching the end of the bridge when it fell into the flooded stream below.
A near by farmer was called by the motorists to give a warning to other cars, and the party drove on to "Woodville and reported to the police. The collapsed bridge was in process of being replaced b\- one of concrete, which is being built a few yards away.
