LOWER HUTT JUBILEE

PROCLAMATION AS A CITY [BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION*] WELLINGTON, Monday Lower Hutt, having a population of over 20,000, has officially become a city, and on Saturday this event was celebrated in association with the jubilee of tho borough. The council met in the morning and tho proclamation of the city status was read. The Mayor, Mr. Andrews, was presented with a new Mayoral chain, and this was followed by the official opening of the new scenic reserve, Jubilee Park, and also of a beautiful fernery presented by the Mayor. A luncheon was held in the afternoon for early residents. The afternoon programme included a procession and pageant.

A message of congratulation from the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, was read by the Mayor. The Government was represented at the luncheon by the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry.
