FORMER AUCKLAND OFFICER
DETECTIVE-SERGT. McWHIRTER
The death has occurred in Gisborn? of Detective-Sergeant George JfcWhirter. Born in Wellington about 38 years ago. Detective-Sergeant McTVhirter came to Auckland at the age of '2O and joined the Police Force here. He rendered conspicuous service during the 15 years he was attached to the Auckland force and lie was one of those who gained recognition in the murder case at Huawaro some years ago. He was promoted to sergeant about three years ago and was transferred to Gisborne. Detective-Sergeant- McWhirter had been in ill-health for the past 18 months. He was weir known in his youth as a keen sportsman, particularly as a footballer. His wife and fonr children survive him.
