MANY GRASS FIRES

BLAZE AT TE PAPAPA BUSY DAY FOR BRIGADES A total of 20 calls was received by the central and suburban fire stations yesterday. There were 16 calls to grass fires, the largest being at To Pa pa pa, near Mount Smart, where about 20 acres of tall gorse was swept by flames which rose 30ft. high. One engine answered the call and the firemen succeeded in preventing the outbreak from endangering neighbouring residences, although one garage was slightly damaged.
