SOUTHERN TEAMS PROSPECTS FOR WELLINGTON DENSITY RETAINS BRILLIANCY [by telegraph—own con respondent] CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday The course at Riccarton has become •very dry. and galloping on any of the grass tracks lias been out of the question. Work to-day was all done on the plough track, and practically all of the horses to race at Trentham next week were out. Winning Rival and Wild Fox ran seven furlongs in 1.30 3-5, finishing together. Bird of Prey and Willow Wood sprinted three "furlongs along the hack in 36 3-os. Pleading strode over six furlongs ill 1.17 4-5. The five horses named will comprise the Chol>e,bore 'Lodge team for Trentham. Good Passage also v.as nominated, but is not to c:o. King's Toast covered six furlongs, under a good hold, in 1.17 1-5. Not Out was given a working gallop over t mile, recording 1.53 1-5. Lord Midas accounted for Gold Nugget over three furlongs home in 37 l-ss. Not Out, Gold Nugget and Salutation were shipped north to-night in charge of F. Roberts. Density, who looks exceptionally bright after her holiday since November, ran half a mile in 48 l-ss. She should race prominently at Trentham. Monetary and Palfrey were under restraint in taking 51 3-5s for half'a mile. Trench Fight required 535. Grey Night attracted attention by reeling oft' six furlongs in 1.15 1-5. He appears to be one of the best prospects of the Riccarton contingent for next week's racing. ;. Doris and Gentility were companions over .five furlongs run in 3.5 2-5. Royal Chief and Iceland Spar galloped seven furlongs in 1.31 2-5. They were not sent out against time, and both pleased. Eulogist was given trotting exercise. He has not yet recovered from bis heel !roub!<\ A two-year-old by Myosotis from Tea Drill, a half-sister to Homer and Rob Roy, was given his first sprintinc by F. D. .Tones, and shaped satisfactorily. He is owned by Mrs. Woodhonse, who will race him in the colours so lone used by her father, the la to Mr. 11 A. Knight. WELLINGTON CUP FANCY KINDERGARTEN FOR SOUTH The three-year-old Kindergarten, who is the early favourite for the Wellington Cup, is to leave for Trentham by the three o'clock express to-dav. All has gone well with Kindergarten since tie won the Great Northern Derby and on several mornings lately he has been taken to,Avondale for special gallops the lefthanded w«v round on the plough. The manner in which "Kindergarten has won at his last four starts has left no doubt that he is well above the average and his prospects in the Wellington' Cup appear very bright. VALUABLE TROPHY CLARE MEMORIAL GOLD CUP The most valuable trophy to be won on the turf in New Zealand is the Clare Memorial Challenge Cup, competed for at the Vincent Jockey Club's Meeting, and at present valued at" £3OO. The cup must be won by the same owner three times in succession or five times at intervals before becoming his property; otherwise, ho holds it for a year. 'I he gold cup was subscribed in remembrance of the late Mr. J. Clare and its original value was £2OO. In 12 contests, no owner has been successful more than once, so it« retention by any sportsman is improbable RIDING ENGAGEMENTS JOCKEYS FOR TRENTHAM Riding engagements announced for the first day of the Wellington Racing Club's Siuri®er Meeting next Thursday are as follows:W.
