WELLINGTON DECISION LAPSING OF MAYOR'S MOTION [by telegraph—OWN con respondent] WELLINGTON, Thursday Pictures will not he screened in Wellington on Christmas Night. The city council decided at its meeting last night not to reconsider its previous decision not to grant permits. A request that the position be reviewed was received from Theatre Management, Limited, on behalf of city theatre proprietors. The Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop. said it seemed to be clear there were sufficient volunteers to carry on front-of-house work that night. His view was that the first consideration was the public, and if the public wanted to go to the pictures on Christmas Night lie did not see any reason why they should be barred from going. Mr. Hislop moved that standing orders be suspended to enable the matter to be reconsidered. The motion lapsed for want of a seconder. "This is the first time we have done this in the history of Wellington." Mr. Hislop said. ''We are just following the small boroughs." Mr. W. Appleton: The Auckland City Council has made the same decision as this council. Mr. Hislop: I was not aware of that. The Auckland City Council has given permission for the screening of pictures on Christmas Night.
