MOTORIST'S DENIAL
CHARGE OF INTOXICATION CASE PARTLY HEARD Charged with being intoxicated in charge of a motor-car in Hincmoa Street, Birkenhead, oil November 24, Desmond Hoyden Walker. sawmilFer, aged 52 (Mr. H. Skclton). pleaded not. guilty before Mr. J. Molding, S.M., in the Police Court yesterday. Joseph Pratt, a traffic officer of the Transport Department, gave evidence that he found accused asleep at the, -wheel of his ear in a bus area at 1.30 p.m. "Witness had difficulty in awakening accused, who appeared to „be intoxicated, and witness took him tß»the police station. Constable C. Snow, of Birkenhead, said lie considered' accused was sufficiently under the influence of liquor not to tie in charge of a car. Dr. Keith H. Hoklgate said he examined accused at 2.15 p.m., and certified him as slightly intoxicated, apparently recovering from an alcoholic bout. He performed the various tests reasonably well. Counsel said accused was at a card party until 4 a.m., and, after sleeping until S o'clock, drove from Torbay to Parnell, and on his way back stopped on a reclamation 90ft. off the road to have a sleep. The case was adjourned until today.
