34 YEARS IN JAPAN
SALVATION ARMY OFFICER [BY telegraph—PHESS ASSOCIATION*] , WELLING TON*, Tuesday A New Zealand officer in the Salvation Army. Brigadier Annie Smyth, who has returned after serving :U years in Japan, says that she personally cfld not; have any trouble, but some members of the Army encountered difficulties. Social work, site said, was being carried on as usual. While visiting Japanese people settled in the Philippines recently she was billeted at the home of the manager of one of the large Japanese commercial houses, and she spoke highly of the hospitality extended to her, even to the extent of lending their car tor her work. If the Army carried out its intention to start a corps in the Philippines, it was probable that Japanese officers from either North or South America would be chosen to take charge. Brigadier Smyth intends to return to Japan after Vie war.
