LAWN TENNIS
OPEN GRADE MATCHES AUCKLAND ASSOCIATION REMUERA LADIES' STRENGTH Matches in the open grade of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association wore continued on Saturday afternoon. Reinuera's win over Parnell B was due chiefly to the strength of its lady players, who won all tlio matches in which they were engaged, with the exception of the first combined doubles. Miss Macfarlane was both too accurate and too severe for Miss Mitchell. A mure even contest resulted between Miss M. liodges and Miss Milne, but the greater pace of the former's forehand proved decisive. In the doubles the Remeura ladies were never threatened. The men's singles were evenly divided. Pountney, playing very well indeed, completely overwhelmed Kadonich, whose chief defensive shot, the lob, was ineffective against his opponent's deadly smashing. Milne encountered difficulty in Diamond's accuracy and steadiness, but superiority in the forecourt earned him the deciding set. Wallace failed to find his best form in either of his matches and lost rather easily to Clements in the l bird singles. Clements showed admirable steadiness and superior courtcraft, especially i:i his judicious use of the lob. Stedman and Hull played a very even three sets, in which '.he latter made rather better use of the openings offered. The 'two doubles matches won by Parnell were due in very large measure to the excellent all-round exhibition of VY. A. F. Bush, a newcomer to the club, whose positional play and courtcraft were ot a very high order. In his men's doubles he was well supported by Clements, and in his combined doubles by Mrs. t'lark, formerly Miss M Waters, i'lie latter was a par'icularly meritorious win, as the opposition of Ulennie and .Miss K. Taylor was strong', Eden and Epsom won four out of the six singles matches, hut only three out ot the seven doubles. In the nun's singles Solomon was the only Campbell Park player to be successful, his all-round play being too severe for Molloy. Potter, on the day, was more accurate than Martin, and Lemon, after having decidedly the worst of a driving duel with Armstrong In the first set, attacked from the forecourt behind heavily spun shots with notable success in the remaining two. McDougall sprang a surprise by defeating Kelly, but his solid exhibition thoroughly warranted the result. McDougall is a player whose game is built on good foundations and one who should improve with more /natch practice. The most sensational win of the day, however, was that of Miss Is". Symes over Miss .Jeffries. Tne Campbell Park player won the first set with ease, lost the second by a narrow margin, and, by splendid play, secured a 5—2 lead in the third. Over-anxiety then led to errors, resulting first, in the loss of the initiative and then of the match. Miss Cowper lost he" singles in quick time to Miss Xhsli, whose steadiness ' was rock-like. Superior combination gave Turner and Potter the advantage ovjr Martin and Solomon in the firsi, men's uoubles, and Lemon and Molloy made letter rse of the net position than their opponents, 'flie remaining men's doubles were very closely contested, but, thanks to Hutchinson's superior generalship, ultimately went to Campbell P-ark. The ladies' doubles were also won by Campbell Park by greater steadiness. The combined doubles were divided, Turner securing the first for Jid.'ii and Epsom arid Hutchinson the second for Campbell Park.
