92ND. BIRTHDAY
MR. FRANCIS MANDER The distinction of being the oldest Onehunga-born person is held by Mr. Francis Mander, of Keith Avenue, Remuera, who celebrated his 92nd birthday on Sunday. After starting work at the age of nine, Mr. Mander had a successful business career, being also a member of Parliament for 20 years and sitting in the Legislative Council for seven vears.
As a youth, Mr. Mander followed a number of occupations, for the most part connected with the land, and for two years worked on the Thames goldfields. He then turned to the timber industry, and for over 30 years was successfully engaged in the northern kauri timber trade, operating mills at many places in partnership with Mr. Samuel Bradley. Standing in the interests of the .Reform Partv, Mr. Mander won the Marsden seat 'in 1902, and held it until 1922, when he retired. In the following vear he was appointed to the Legislative Council.
