WHANGAKEI, Friday Although units of the Home Guard have been formed in the Whangarei County, the central committee for the area- has just been set up. The cipal officers are Messrs. J. G. Draper (chairman). E. L. Whimp (deputychairman) , W. H. Robinson (secretary) and W. H. Fade (treasurer). The various local bodies in the area", together with the Returned Soldiers' "Association. the Farmers' Union and the Trades and Labour Council, are represented on the committee. ENROLMENT OFFICERS APPEAL FOR VOLUNTEERS [from our own* correspondent] HAMILTON, Friday "The establishment and enrolment of the Home Guard in the Hamilton area is essential and urgent." said the Mayor, Mr. H. D. Caro, in an appeal to residents of leisure to offer their services as enrolment officers. Mr. Caro said a recruiting office would be opened in Garden Place, and relays of helpers serving two hours each a day were required. '• r , AREA COMMANDER OFFICER FOR WHANGAREI [by telegraph —PUF.SS association] WELLINGTON, Friday The appointment of Second-Lieuten-ant H. F. Chandler as area commander for the Home C<uard at ngarei was announced by the Minister, of National Service," the Hon. R. Sempie. this evening. Lieutenant Chandler served as a trooper in the t South African Light Horse in 1899- - 1900. During the last war ho joined -r., the Expeditionary Force iri 1916 and served until 1919. On returning to New Zealand he served with the Territorial Force from 1926 until 1935, being granted a commission as secondlieutenant.
