GENERAL SITUATION The Government meteorologist adl.tised last evening that a deep cyclone UWas developing rapidly west of New lOPlymouth, and should pass across the southern part of the North Island dur:ing the next 12 to 24 hours. Pressure was rising rapidly in the south. Forecast: Northerly winds at first over the northern halt of the North Island, butbacking soon to westerly and later to south-westerly; elsewhero easterly to south-easterly prevailing, strong generally, with widespread gales from Canterbury northward. Seas moderate in- , shore south of Westport and in Fovcaux Strait;- elsewhere rough to 1 high. Weather fair in Southland and [improving in Westland; elsewhere dull, >;with widespread rain; stormy conditions jlikely from, Nelson and Marlborough [northward, with heavy rain at times ijand later a possibility of flooding.
