WOMAN BOOKMAKER

OPERATIONS AT ELLERSLIE A charge of carrying on the business of a bookmaker at Kllerslie on October 14 was admit :ed in the Police Court yesterday by a married woman, Mary Buckton, aged 59 (Mr. Meek), before Mr. F. Tl. liC'ien. S.M. Detective-Sergeant N.ilder said that, following con; plaints about accused's activities, a constable placed several bets with her, 501110 after the totalisator had closed for the race. Women were the chief offenders rn cases of this type, said Mr. Nalder, and. in spite of penalties which had been imposed, continued to operate. Accused was not experienced in hookmaking, said counsel. She was of a nervous type, and wished to make money to go for a long holiday.
