FISH AND BIRDS

TROUT FRY LIBERATIONS DUCK AND PHEASANT REARING [bt telegraph—OWN con respondent] ROTORUA, Friday The liberation of trout fry in various lakes in the Rotorua district according to their popularity with fishermen had been the policy of the Internal Atfairs Department, said the conservator of iisli and game, Mr. A. Kean, yesterday. Thus there had been an increasing number of liberations in Lake Okataina in the past few years and not many in Rerewliakaitu ; where 75,000 fry were liberated this week. Rotoehu had also become popular and consequently more liberations bad been made there recently. During the past week 105,000 fry had been sent from the Ngongotaha hatcheries to the Tauranga Acclimatisation Society. There are about 200,000 fry still in the Ngongotaha. hatchery and 600,000 at Tongariro, hub all will be liberated before the opening of the fishing season on November 1.

Favourable weather has resulted in activities at the State game farm being further advanced than usual at this time of the year. With the mallard ducks laying earlier and good hatchings, it is expected that the first liberations may be made before Christmas. Already some of the young birds are one-third grown. Pheasants are still laying well and IVSO eggs are being hatched, so that the first pheasant liberations may be made in January.
