A STANDING ARMY

Sir, —The contribution by "S.H.TC." in the Hf.iiai.l) of October 15, speaking of the general regret of the territorial at having to give up camp life, with its atmosphere oi well-being and something accomplished, goes to prove the correctness ol an opinion which I have ever held. i.e.. that it is far better physically and morally for a country to pay a standing army than a sitting one. In the establishing ol a permanent Army the Government has the unemployment problem largely solved. It is infinitely preferable to pay a man lor doing something than nothing. As a member of the permanent Army, his sell-respect is assured, lie is clothed and led. and lives' a well-regulated, healthy life, and feels that ho is of value to the nation.

We are told to go to the ant. to learn ol its ways and be wise. The ant has ever had its standing army, but our present Government would he adversely criticised by a certain section if they went to the ant and learned of its ways and wisdom. So they arc in a cleft stick. The problem solved is not solved, as it is not the solution wanted. Tliev have gone to the bee. which harbours drones, instead of to the ant. JvW.B.
