PATRIOTIC FUNDS

RETURNED MEN'S PROTEST CONTROL OF •VETERANS* HOME The disposal of the funds of the Auckland Patriotic and War Relief Association bv paying half to the National War Funds Council and half to the Veterans' Home was discussed at a provincial conference of Returned Soldiers' Association branches. It was decided to approve the Auckland branch's resolution to drop action in the matter, on the grounds that litigation would probably involve heavy expenses and because legal advice doubted the success of attempting an injunction to prevent the disposal. Representation of returned men on the Patriotic Association in its remaining work of controlling -and maintaining the Veterans' Home was then discussed and it was decided to demand direct representation on the committee to control the home.

Another resolution registered an emphatic protest against_ the disposal of the Patriotic Association's funds, on the ground that they should have been expended in the relief of distress among the returned men of the Auckland Province in accordance with the original intention of those who subscribed the funds.

ACTIVITIES OF THE COUNCIL PROVINCIAL CONFERENCE Details of the organisation of the Auckland Provincial Patriotic Council's operations were subjected to a thorough scrutiny at a conference at the Town Hall yesterday which was attended by over 50 secretaries and treasurers of zone and inter-zone committees. The provincial/secretary, Mr. K. L. Usmar, presided. The delegates were welcomed by the president of the council, the Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, and the business, which occupied the whole day, was taken in committee. One of the matters which was fully discussed was the campaign now being carried out for raising the provincial quota of £250,000 of the Dominion appeal for £1,000,000 for the many patriotic activities which are now tho responsibilities of the provincial councils.
