SPRING MEETING FAST TIMES RECORDED SENTIMENT TAKES CUP Three each-way favourites, Kinawley, Sentiment and Davey Day, and another place favourite. Tangaroa, were successful at the Thames Trotting Club's Spring Meeting at. Parawai on Saturday. Kinawley, who won two races, returned double figures at her second success; being only third choice to Mitaya and Cloverdale in the Totara Handicap. A feature was the success of horses trained and driven by F. J. Smith, 'Sentiment, who scotcd in the Goldfields Cup, and Kinawley, being from Jiis stable. . The weather was delightfully fine and there a 5 a larce attendance. The course wus in excellent order and fast times were registered, placed horses, with the exception of those I" tho Omahu Handicap, showing considerable improvement on their handicaps. The totalisator handled £16,651, compared : w jtb f 14,058 for the spring meeting in IMS B nd £15.290 for the autumn meeting last leason, when only one meeting was held.

Commons, was held into the improved form of the winner, Davey Day, compared with his running in the haraka Handicap, in which he finished fifth, the judicial committee accepted the explanation of the driver. PASSING OF JAMES SCOBIE (Received October 0. 4.30 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Octotier « The veteran trainer James Scobio died yesterday, aged 80 years. He was the doyen of Australian trainers and retired only recently. The late Mr.'Scobie prepared winners or almost every important race in Australia, hp J*on the Melbourne Cup with Bitalli, Kwk Injoda. Clean Sweep and Trivalve. . Horses prepared by him won the victoria Derby eight times, the A.J.C. Derby and the South Australian Derby each four times, the V.R.C. Sires' Produce Stakes seven times, and the Maribyrnong Plate five times. His charges n!so secured four Australian Lups, six Williamstown Cups and five Adelaide Cups. Patrons of the stable won £200.000 in stake-money.
