Snail Tank Corps
T)EAR ANNE SHIRLEY—One morning I was watching a large snail in his, kingly car moving over the flower-bed toward a hyacinth plant and leaving a trail of silver in its wake. Suddenly a bird settled on the garden and the snail withdrew into his shell until the bird had flown off in search of other food. Before long I noticed several other snails moving slowly along after their
kinglike leader and looking like a number of tanks moving forward to the attack. They were well camouflaged against attack from the air, but the little forts were not quite prepared, for suddenly a blackbird dived down, picked one up and let him orash to destruction on the footpath. Well, cheerio. —David Havill (12), Pokeno.
