DAMAGE BY FIRE

COUNCIL OFFICE AND HALL i J [bt telegraph—press association*] GOKE, Friday Fire early this morning extensively damaged the Mataura Borough Council chambers and Coronation Hall. The brigade was faced with a difficult task owing to tho fire having spread from tho back of tho building to the coiling, and an hour elapsed before the flames were subdued.

The public library of 2000 books suffered through fire, smoke and water, as also did the reading room. Valuable photographic records were destroyed, but tho main office escaped lightly. The contents of the strongroom and office records are intact. Insurance of £IOOO on the building and furnishings is in the Standard Office.
