NATIVE LAND RATES
ROTORUA DISTRICT CLAIM [ry telegraph—OWN correspondent] ROTORUA, Thursday The opinion' that now most of the native land schemes in the Eotorua district were matured and producing well, a larger quota of the settlers should pay county rates was expressed at a meeting of the Rotorua County Council. This was embodied in a motion by the chairman, Mr. H. P. Ford. The clerk, Mr. A. Bellingham, said that of the £IBOO levied in rates on native lands in the district, £IOO had. been collecetd last year. On six" of the schemes £250 .had been collected last year of £383 levied in fates and £2SI in arrears. Some schemes paid almost in full- Until the farms under the scheme provided sufficient to meet the capital outlay there were no rates paid, but some of the farms were so heavily loaded that it was .doubtful when they would pay any rates at all. "It puts a* premium on success," said Mr. Ford, who emphasised that it was unfair that some should pay while others did not.
