TRADE IN AUCKLAND BUSY WEEK EXPERIENCED DEMAND FOR SUMMER LINES Another husv week hns been experienced by wholesale grocery merchants in Auckland. There is a marked increase in the inquiry for such lines as canned fruit and fish, jelly crystals and (>crir preserver, indicating the commencement of the summer - demand. The recent fino weather lias stimulated the inquiry. Tobacco deliveries for the period from September 10 to .'JO will he made to both tho town and country 011 Monday and excellent orders have been' received. Merchants are anxiously awaiting some announcement regarding fifth period licences. Most of the goods covered by fourth period licences have now been received or are 011 the water. Normally most grocery merchants are concentrating on sellinc the goods already 011 hand, and there is a lull in ordering until the commencement of the now year. In the present war circumstances, however, there is the necessity for ordering earlier than usual. The drapery trade is more affected, for it is necessary to order well in advance for the various seasonal goods. Pimento.—Prices for new season's pimento show a fair advance over previous rates. Sago and Tapioca,—Cablegrams from tho East report a steadily-rising market for sago and tapioca. Condensed Milk. —The price of an Australian pack of condensed milk lias been reduced by Is a case. Wrapping Paper.—The acute shortage of all types of wrapping paper, which has ruled for some time, hiis been relieved during the past week. Soap.—A slight reduction in the price of several lines of tablet toilet soap manufactured 'in New Zealnnd has been announced. Australian manufacturers of household soap have reduced prices, duo to cheaper tallow markets Dried Fruit,—Aft fourth period licences for Australian sultanas and currant have now been executed, stocks at present in store will have to last until new season's supplies arc available in April. These stocks, however, are not large, and shortages are expected later. Salmon. —A report from overseas states that the British Government has purchased in Canada all the probable packs of sockeye salmon for tho coming season. It is, therefore, improbable that any of this grade of salmon will bo available for export from Canada. Matches.—The Price Investigation Tribunal lias fixed tho maximum price «t which boxes of wooden Safety matches can be sold throughout New Zealand in less than packet lots at Id a box. Tho price order applies to wooden matches of any brand or description in boxes designed lo hold up to approximately 00 matches,
