THE AEROPLANE FUND HANDED TO GOVERNMENT SUGGESTION FOR NAMES FINAL CONTRIBUTIONS The total amount of subscriptions to the Herald Readers' Aeroplane Fund, £33.872 Os 2d, has been remitted to the Secretary to the Treasury, and tho Prime Minister, the lit. Hon. P. Fraser, has been asked 16 send the money to Lord Beaverbrook, Minister of Aircraft Production in Great Britain. _ The following cablegram was sent yesterday to Lord Beaverbrook: —
NeW Zealand Herald readers within three weeks subscribed over £33,000, which wo have requested the Prime Minister to remit to .you for the purchase of aeroplanes. This gift is offered as a grateful tribute to the lloyal Air Force. People's Tribute A letter signed by Sir Henry Horton, managing director of Wilson and Horton, Limited, was sent to the Prime Minister yesterday, informing him that the amount subscribed to the fund had been remitted to the Treasury. The letter continued: — "The fund was opened to meet a general desire to make a direct bution toward tho equipment of the Royal Air Force for its magnificent defence of the Homeland. That so .substantial an amount has been voluntarily subscribed in three weeks is a manifestation of zealous and united determination, on the part of the people of tho city and the province of Auckland, to do all possible, in company with those of othor parts of the Dominion, to speed tho cause to which Britain and her Allies are dedicated. "The desire of the contributors is that you will remit this,sum to Britain's Minister of Aircraft Production, the j Rt. Hon. Lord Beaverbrook, for the purchase of war aeroplanes for the Royal Air Force, whose magnificent courage, prowess, and devotion to duty are' an abiding inspiration to all members of our Empire. AVe feel sure that Auckland's ready response to the appeal will be heartily appreciated by the whole of tho people of Great Britain as well as the Royal Air Force. "We believe the amount of the Herald readers' fund will pay for five fighter aeroplanes. Will you please suggest to Lord Beaverbrook that the aeroplanes be named Auckland 1., Auckland 11., Auckland 111., Auckland IV., and Auckland V." Further Contributions Several contributions which were not received in time for acknowledgment in the list published on Monday are included in the total remittance to the Treasury. DOMINION SQUADRON £250 WESTLAND DONATION [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] HOKITIKA. Wednesday The Westland County Council decided at a meeting this afternoon, as a mark of appreciation of the New Zealand airmen in the defence of Britain, to contribute £250 to the New Zealand Aeroplane Fund for use of the Dominion squadron on servico.
