RICCARTON HORSES

SPRING ENGAGEMENTS FORWARD TWO-YEAR-OLDS DENSITY IN SOLID CONDITION [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] CHRISTCHURCH, Wednesday Density lias grown into a big mare and she is in solid condition. Her first appearance this season is expected to be at the Timaru meeting next month and no doubt she will be sent on to Trentham.

Dr. M. G. Louisson's two-year-old filly by Myosotis from Royal Baby has been named Blue Bouquet. She was given barrier practice to-day and moved out smartly from the tapes: Her stable-mate, Required, by Tiderace from Kotou, owned by Mr. M. J. Median, Timaru, also shaped well.

I'he breakdown suffered yesterday by Wagner has proved to be sorious and it is doubtful if he will race again. Wagner has never oeen a sound horse, but ho has been a useful performer for Mr. D. O. Rutherford. Court Yard and Sir Frederick were companions in a round of the. hurdles to-day, the latter especially being impressive. Haughty Winner has been in steady work since the Grand National meeting and it is intended to race him at Trentham next month. In the meantime, he will be raced at the Kurow meeting, to be held at Oamaru at the end of the month and ho will probably bo accompanied by Cymric, who will be nominated for the Kurow Cup. Hclenora, tho filly by Solicitor-General from Helen Gold, wiio is trained for Miss M. C. Wilson, Reefton. by C. McCarthy, is one of the most torward of tho two-year-olds at Riccarton, but she was not entered for the McLean Stakes.

Au attractive two-year-old sired by Myosotis is a bay colt from Palanquin, by Paladin from Lady Kinloch. The colt is trained by H. Nurse, who will race him in partnership with Mr. C. L. Rhodes. The colt has been named Hammall, by which a rickshaw man is known. Ho is in the McLean Stakes.

Arctic Dawn, by Day Comet from Aurora Borealis, has rejoined G. Ridgway's stable. He has grown into a massive three-year-old. He was in work for a while last season. A two-year-old half-brother t-o Arctic Dawn is shortly to bo sent to Ridgway by Mr. J. H. Grigg. Ho is by The Greek, who was represented for the first time by Greek Step, runner-up in tho Wanganui Debutant Stakes last week. The two-year-old will not be raced this season. Aurora Borealis missed to Theio last season and is to be mated with Defaulter. Another two-year-old sent in by Mr. Grigg is a sister to Flashlight and she is to race, as Love Bird.

FILLIES PREPONDERATE DEBUTANT STAKES RUNNERS A feature of the Debutant': Stakes at Awapuni last Saturday was the preponderance of fillies, there being only four colts in the field of 18. There can.be no doubt that the likeliest youngsters all failed to finish in the money. There were, some beautiful types, and among them can be included the favourite, Pay Roll, Golden Moon, Fleche D'Or, and the two stablemates, Colombo Bay and Flying Spray. Pay Poll is a good advertisement for his sire, Croupier, who may dp well at the stud if he gets the right patronage. Golden Moon is also a type very hard to fault, and should win races. Colombo Bay and Flying Spray paraded'together and went down together, and it would bo hard to find a neater pair of little ladies on any track. It is a pity that when the Wanganui Jockey Club decided -to race elsewhere and obtained the use of tho Awapnni track they did not revise their programme slightly and give the Debutant Stakes a trifle longer distance and so avoid the start on the turn. The chances of those drawn anywhere outside the first half-dozen were gone from the moment of the draw, and even an extra half-furlong would have given a fairer test. MATCH CANCELLED BEAULIVRE AND BEAU VITE SYDNEY, Sept. 11 The match race between Beaulivre and Beau Vite has suddenly been declared off. The committee controlling the Red Cross races on September 21 reconsidered the matter to-day -—believably in consultation with the Australian Jockey Club —and the announcement made to-night states: " The abandonment of the match is due to a desire not to jeopardise the prospects in important engagements of either horse at the spring racing carnival." The committee, in expressing its appreciation of the spontaneous offer of Messrs. E. C. Harnett and R. Stewart to provide the match, announced that instead £SOO would be added to the Hill Stakes, one mile, at the Rosehill meeting, in which it is expected Beaulivre and Beau participate.

JOTTINGS TRACK AND STABLE GOSSIP The colours of the Hons. G. R. Hunter and P. C. Webb, which have not been in evidence lately, will be carried at Ashburton by Toro' Koura, who has been operated on for respiratory trouble since he last raced.

Gayest Son, who had very little racing last year, is making good progress at Hastings and he should soon in racing condition. Royal Minstrel, who has not raced since Easter, is also, in good order to begin a serious preparation.

Of the thre'e-yeax-olds seen at the Wanganui Jockey Club's meeting, Sir Beau was easily the most impressive, but one observer claims that Enrich,. Belle Cane, Black Robe, Kentucky and All Quiet will all be at least useful. Belle Cane is much above the average maiden winner of recent months.

After having been in existence for 67 years, the Alexandra ltacing Club has decided to abandon its annual non-totalisator race meeting which was to have been held at Pirongia on Boxing Day. Petrol restrictions and the fact that a loss was made last year were the principal deciding factors.

Apparently, says a southern writer, tho stable had been sheltering an angel unawares in Lochcoribb, who on her form in the Hunt Club Steeples at Wingatui_ would have been a winner at the Grand National meeting. She is a sister to Shillelagh Wood and a half-sister to Ballybrit.

The Buzzer is in work again and is one of the entrants for the New Zealand Cup. He won the Auckland Cup of 1937 when racing as a four-year-old. In the following season he was second to Arctic King in tho New Zealand Cup, and third in the Metropolitan Handicap to Padishah and Sovereign Lady. Last season Tho Buzzer was unplaced in four starts.

Halifax, a Derby candidate, for whom his owner. Mr. V. J. Plumb, had recently refused an offer of r>ooo guineas, was so severely injured during the running of the. Warriston Handicap at Flemingion on Saturday tiiafc he had to bo destroyed. He had the tendons of his off hind leg completely severed through another horse striking him. Halifax was a colt by Christopher Robin from Bareena.

A recent incident at Rosehill, when a bolting horse collided with another going to the post, has raised the question of a veterinarian being at the start of each race under the jurisdiction of the Australian Jockey Club. Tho starter was asked by the jockey to examine the horse who had been struck but that official could see no sign of injury and he permitted the horse to - start. >icvert.hothe horse was tailed off all the way and soon afterwards his hindquarters became very swollen.

Very high praise was bestowed on Plana after her success in the Adelaide Guineas by Mr. G'. Wheeler, whose opinion is highly rated both in Australia and New Zealand. He described Plana as being not only in the front rank of three-year-olds in Australia but the best filly he had seen in that quarter for °0 vears. Tla saw no reason why sho would not win the Victoria Oaks, which is to be her mission at Flernington. Plana is a brown filly by.-Salatis from Lady Nalpa, and in eight starts last season she won six times and was once second.
