NEW YORK BREAK GAINS WIPED OUT RESULT OF AIR RAIDS (Received September 30, 0.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, Sept.'o Stocks broke sharply on Wall Street, wiping out 85 per cent of last week's recovery. There was only moderate trading to-day. The reason for the fall was tho intensification of air raids and the weakened technical position of the list, resulting from the recent rise. Wheat lost over one cent a bushel. HOARDING OF SILVER PRACTICE STOPS IN AUSTRALIA The hoarding of silver —a well-known phenomenon in wartime —which recently was indicated in Australia by an abnormal demand on tho banks for tho coin, has now apparently ceased. Coins are coming back to the trading and savings banks. * The demand for coin began at about the same time as a demand for currency notes. The hoarders of silver favoured florins, which were buried in tins or locked away in safe deposits. The Commonwealth Bank, as custodian of the silver circulation, took appropriate steps in conjunction with the Mint authorities to meet all demands lor more coins. The Treasury in Singapore was for one day recently so thronged with people who presented currency notes for up to 50 dollars (£'7 os) in notes of 10 dollars (£1 9s) each for conversion into silver coins that the doors had to bo closed temporarily. OTAGO WOOL PROSPECTS MORE AND BETTER QUALITY[by TELEGRAPH —OWN COItnKSrOXDKNT] DUNEDIN, Tuesday A larger wool clip of hotter quality than was the case last season should enable Otago growers to take full advantage of the extra threepence a. pound they are receiving under the Empire purchase scheme, compared with the 15M8-M season. Tho benefit of the increase in the average price was largely lost by producers last year owing to tho clip being lighter and of poorer quality. Following on oho of the mildest winters experienced in Otago for-many years the clip for the coming appraisals should show a marked improvement, on that of last year. Stock has wintered exceptionally well and there have been practically no losses. In most districts growers anticipate encouraging shearing, with quality well nbovo last year ,s. Judications also point to a much larger weight of wool. THE CITY MARKETS LOW RATES FOR CARROTS Carrots were in over-supply nt the City Markets yesterday. There were good supplies of cabbages and cauliflowers, low prices being maintained.
