MAN ASPHYXIATED
FIRE IN NEWMARKET HOUSE An inquest into the death of Mr. Albert Bayly Smith, clerk, aged 66. of 15 Maungawhau Road, Newmarket, was concluded before Mr. F. K. Hunt, coroner, yesterday, when a verdict of death from asphyxiation was .returned. Ernest Albert Ander, third officer, of the Auckland Metropolitan Fire Brigade, said lie was in charge of a brigade which answered a call to 15 Maungawhau Road at 9.55 p.m. on August 3. The house was well alight when the brigade arrived and witness entered through the back door and investigated. In a room on the ground floor he found a man lying in bed. The clothes were thrown back as if lie had tried to get up. He had the appearance of having been breathing smoke for some time. The room was full of smoke. . . Evidence was also given r>v two sisters, Misses Joan and Elsie rlavell. who had been living at 15 Maungawhau Road at the time. At 7.30 on August 3 thev were smoking in their bedroom. Thev' placed their cigarettes and matches in an ash trav before they left at 8.15 p.m., when there was no sign of smoke or fire.
