CITY RATES
STEADY PAYMENTS NEARLY £50,000 IN MONTH BETTER THAN LAST YEAR Bate payments for the current period are being made at the City Council treasury department in a most satisfactory measure. The demands were issued only a. month ago and the amount already received, £49,7p6, is over £3OOO greater than that jJaid in at this time last year, although the demands were posted three weeks later this year. In addition water rates to a total of £B9ll have been paid in as against £7696 for last year. Arrears of rates collected this year have amounted to £22,801, as against £33,567 last year, but the lower figure this year is largely accounted for by tho fact that during the past few years the council has been getting in large accumulations of arrears which resulted from the depression years and there was a very much smaller amount outstanding this year. Revenue from rates does not take into account payments for water charged through meter readings. This year the revenue from this source has been £27,775 compared with £25,726 received last year. The council has estimated that it will receive £588,790 in rates for the rating year 1940-41. The Mayor, Sir Ernest Davis, said yesterday 'that he was rery_ gratified with the way in which the citizens were responding to the rate demands posted only a month ago. He felt that the reduction of 3d in the pound which had been made in the total rate levj for this year was being appreciated.
