TAXES ON SMALL INCOMES
Sir, —May I point out, since wages and salaries are being increased to improve the standard of living of Some citizens, that there are people in New Zealand existing on very small incomes, and a lot of them are retired civil servants. It is high time some of our members of Parliament investigated the matter of people on small incomes being severely penalised with taxes on incomes they themselves have built up during their lifetime for their old age. What with the high cost of living and other expenses I would suggest that a married man, receiving less than £4 per week, be exempt from tax altogether. To quote the late Richard John Seddon: "This is God's own country," may I add that it is a pity some peoplo who have helped to build it up with their labour and industry have been overlooked, or forgotten, by all except the commissioner of taxes.
