LATE PROFESSOR M. WALKER TRIBUTE-BY COLLEGE COUNCIL A tribute to the faithful services given to Auckland University College by the late Professor Maxwell Walker, professor of modern languages, ira 3 paid by the president, Mr. W. "H. Cocker, at a meeting of the college council yesterday. He said Professor Walker's loss would be sincerely felt by those associated with the college and also a large boay of past students, and it would be no light task to find a worthy successor. ' j Mr. Cocker said Professor Walker occupied the position of chairman: of the Professorial Board on several occasions, he was a member of" the Academic Board, and for several periods was a member of the council. Students and staff alike learned to respect him. His sympathetic understanding of the student point~«f view, coupled with his strong sense of justice, engendered confidence on the part 0 ' all who had dealings with him. Dnrug his last illness his constant anxiety was lest his students should be prejudiced in their work by his absence. The following resolution was passed: "The council places on record its high sense of the faithful services rendered to the college by the late Professor Maxwell Walker and of the great los which it has sustained by his death-As member of the staff for 38 years ..an as professor of modern languages A over 30 years, he has exerted a strong influence on the lifo of the colteg during .the greater part of its lushk* His expert knowledge and balanc judgment havo enabled him t° P'3} valuable and constructive part bot .. the academic activities of the .co J and in the deliberations of the cpu • To his relatives the council extends deepest sympathy." _ f .
