CARING FOR TROOPS

"EXCELLENT WORK"

LONDON-NEW ZEALANDERS GENERAL FREYBERG'S PRAISE [from our own correspondent] LONDON, August 2 Praise from General B. C. Freyberg, V.C., officer commanding the New Zealand Expeditionary. Force, is surely praise indeed, and any New Zealand soldiers who spent their first 48 hours' leave in London would be the first to agree that the New Zealand War Services Association fully deserves every word of his appreciation. New Zealand has every reason to be proud of this association in London. It was formed many months ago, lp"g before there was any thought of New Zealanders coming to Britain. LondonNew Zealanders know that before the war finished there would be a "job of work" for them to do. So they met at the Royal Empire Society's buildings, formed a committee, and set to work. Before the troops arrived, they raised money. The matinee performance, which was attended by the Duchess, of Kent, set a new record for raising funds in the West End of London. When the New Zealanders reached England the association was ready and waiting to see that "our boys" were well looked after when they came to London on leave. For what the association did, it earned the warm praise and thanks of General Freyberg. . "I would like to thank you and your committee," he said, in a letter to the chairman, Mr. W. J. Jordan, the High Commissioner, "most sincerely for the excellent work which you have been doing for the New Zealanders. The troops have appreciated so very much the many kindnesses which * have already been shown to them through your arrangements, that I hope the members of the committee will be able to find time to continue working for us." If proof were needed of the warm regard felt by men of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force for the association, it is the fact that Brigadier N. S Falla and Colonel K. MacCormick have been appointed members of the committee,' while Brigadier J. Hargest attended a recyyit committee meeting.
