LONGER HOURS

OFFER BY EMPLOYEES PENROSE FACTORY STAFF ASSISTING WAR EFFORT An instance of the appreciation of the need lor increased output as a contribution toward the war effort has been given by the employees at the foundry of Booth, Macdonald and Company. Limited. at Penrose. They adopted tho following resolution at a special meeting:—"That this meeting of employees wishes to convey to the Government our desire to do our utmost to further New Zealand's war effort. We accordingly offer our services on Saturday mornings for four hours at ordinary rates of pay, the starting and stopping times to be arranged by mutual agreement between management and workers." The company is engaged on Government contracts, but in order to work the factory as a unit, work other than for war purposes has to be performed by various sections of employees. This feature is fully realised by the stafl. It is understood by both management and staff that the working of a 44-hour week at ordinary rates of pay is a war effort 011I3'. and it will not he used to the detriment of the workers when ;i return to a 40-hour week becomes possible. Formal request is being made to the Production Emergency Committee to consider the bearing of an application to permit the extension of factory hours from 10 to 44 a week.
