STOCKS AND SHARES
THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE LITTLE ALTERATION IN VALUES Share values showed only slight alterations when the Auckland Stock reopened yesterday. Although tlio undertone was firm, there was still an atmosphere of caution. Government loans were well sought, but wide margins ruled generally. Banks were about stationary, but there was some activity in the insurance group, where offers were raised. In some fairly isolated cases buyers lowered their limits for miscellaneous industrials, but taken as a whole the section maintained its strength.
BUILDING DESTRUCTION WORK OF TIMBER PESTS DRASTIC ERADICATION URGED Evidence obtained regarding the destruction of wooden buildings by timber pests in New Zealand emphasises tlio necessity for drastic methods in combating and eradicating such pests, according to the annual report of the Stato Advances Corporation. Apart from common to New Zealand and known to the layman as borer, it is reported that Australian timber and soil-dwelling termites have become established in northern districts of New Zealand. "In parts of the Dominion," the report continues, "there is a growing tendency to adopt permanent materials in preference to timber for residential buildings. In view, however, of our national assets in the form of timber forests, it is the corporation's opinion that an active programme of scientific drying and pro-treatment of timber by producing and distributing interests is essential. "Such action would ensure a longterm life of utility to wooden buildings and maintain the confidence of lending institutions in this tvoo of security," the report states. "With a view to coping with soil-dwelling termites. tho corporation has adopted for fnturo loans in certain areas a condition providing for complete metal capping of foundations in housing construction."
