TROTTING SEASON

SADDLE RACES REJECTED CHANGE FOR GOLDEN JOURNEY BY ABAYDOS The 1010-11 trotting season will open at Addington with the Metropolitan Club's carnival on August .10, 14 and Hi. for which several Auckland horses' are entered. The season in the .North Island opens with the Auckland Club's meeting on August 31. The young trotter Golden Journey, who attracted attention when she won at the November matinee meeting and run third in a maiden race at Claudelands, will make her next appearance under the. charge of F. J. Smith. Golden Journey is by Surprise Journey from CI olden G rattan, dam of winners' Kuini and Golden Maid. At the annual meeting of, the Auckland Trotting Club on Wednesday Mr. Hall.vburton Johnstone made another pica in favour of an occasional saddle race at Epsom. He reminded the committee that a promise was made last year to have at least one race. The chairman, Mr. E. G. Bridgens, replied that the committee, after careful thought, had come to the conclusion that with a dearth of pood and reliable saddle horses such a race would not be an attraction to racegoers. Discretion of Clubs The question of more two-mile races for pacers was referred to by Mr. H. E. Salter. He said he was under the impression that the remit adopted by conference aimed at the principal race on all'programmes being run over two miles. Mr. Bridgens said the proposal as adopted by conference did not- specify any particular race, and it was at the discretion of clubs. Although the Auckland-bred trotter Great Mountain has not raced extensively, he. has made his way to a 3.31 lir.e, and he is on the limit of the Introductory Handicap next month. He is by Great Parrish from Mountain Princess, a Blue Mountain King mare, who probably would have reached a high plane had she not met with an injury after reaching the intermediate grade. Horsepower, who recorded two firsts and a second in three starts at the Auckland summer meeting and added three wins and two. thirds tolas list on returning south, should have a fine chance of Qualifying for the Now Zealand Trotting Cup during the Addington meeting next month. Ho is on the limit of the August Handicap. Position of Franz Derby Although the reassessments for next season were released early to allow owners to enter their horses for Addington, Franz Derby, handicapped on 4.30, was listed for the <1.38 Stewards Handicap. Using the power vested in him by the conditions of the programme, the handicapper transferred Franz Derby to the 3.31 Introductory Handicap, in which she. is on 72 yards. . .. Chatinos, an aged pacer by Wrack from Lady Superior, dam of Cardinal Logan and Quality, and who is owned by Mr. J. Grice, has a very Tine record. He has been raced sparingly and last season he won at each of his three estarts, although dividing one stake with Black Surprise. This term he has prevailed in his only two efforts, and next month he is nicely placed on 21 yards in the Advance Handicap, with a -J.40 limit. The grey pacer Blue Mountain, who a few seasons ago was in the first flight and won many good handicaps for Mrs. I. E. Sweetapple, is a surprise entry for the August Handicap, in which he has been assessed at 1.27. He is on the limit of the 2.4."} International Handicap. With King's Play and King's Warrior, Blue Mountain takes rank as the best of Blue Mountain King's male progeny. The proposal of the Canterbury Park Trotting Club that each club holding four or more days of racing should intrude !n the programme of each alternate day at least one race for B and C grade horsemen only, such race to be other than for maiden horses was not discussed at the meeting of conference, the sponsors agreeing to withdraw the remit.
