Engine Savings
Some British owners of straight eight-cylinder cars are reported to be converting their cars.into four-cylinder models, thus reducing the rateable horsepower and halving the cost ot registration. At the same time, a vastly better fuel consumption is obtained, and it is said, with fairly smooth running. , ■ There are disadvantages associated with this expedient, chief of which is that acceleration suffers and the car appears sluggish on hills, necessitating a more liberal use of the gears, However, apparently some English motorists deem tlie savings justify the temporary conversion, because the engine can be restored to its original effective power at any time.
