REMOVAL OF MONUMENT

BLACK HOLE OF CALCUTTA CALCUTTA, July 23 The Bengal Government has decided to remove the Black Hole of Calcutta monument from the present site. When Suraj-ud-Dowlah, Nawab of Bengal, sacked Calcutta in 1756, the European prisoners, numbering 146, were confined in a chamber measuring •18ft. by 14ft. 10in., with but two small windows, where they were left for the night. When morning came, only 23 were taken out alive from tho place, which is known as the Black Hole of Calcutta. An expedition from Madras under Admiral Watson and Colonel Clive recaptured the town in January, 1757. The modern city dates from this period.
