LINEN FLAX GROWING
: AREA REQUIRED EXCEEDED PRICES TO BE PAID FOR SEED [BY TELEGRAPH —SPECIAL REPORTER] WELLINGTON, Thursday South Island farmers have now moro than met tho request of the Government to put aside 15,000 acres for tho growing of linen flax, which is being undertaken following representations recently made by the British Government. Tho Director of Primary Production, Mr. R. 13. Teiment, said in an interview to-day that the authorities were embarrassed by tho response, for tho area available was greater than was required.
Mr. Tonncnt said that contracts had been forwarded to farmers for signature. It is provided that the price to be paid to tho farmer for straw from which tho seed has been taken is £4 5s a ton. Tho prices which will be paid for the seed are:—For crops accepted, £25 a ton; for crops rejected, £35 a ton.
This appeared to lie anomalous, Mr. Tennent said, but where the crop was rejected the farmer had to harvest, thresh and dress the seed and deliver it into store at his own cost, while for the accepted crop the Government undertook to do tho harvesting, threshing, seed-dressing and delivery.
