Lee (Democratic Labour —Grey Lynn), speaking in the House or Representa--tives to-day, suggested that a delegation from the House, composed of three or four members, should be sent to the • United States Consulate to thank the American peopla.for what they were doing in assisting the " Empire's effort. .... ' "The delegation should not ask for anvthing more," Mr. Lee - said, "but should explain that,.after all, we are conscious of their assistance. I think on Julv 4 we should wish the people of the United States well, and I trust that something will yet be done to make them conscious of the fact that New Zealand is grateful for the part they are playing. CALLS AT CONSULATE THE CUSTOMARY CEREMONY' The 164 th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence fell yesterday, and the national flag was "flown at the United States Consulate iu Auckland. The members of the Auckland Consular Corps, _ headed by the sub-dean, Mr. D. Hi. Nathan, Consul for Portugal, called on the American YiceConsul', Mr. L. A. Bachelder, who is in charge during the absence of the Consul. Mr. J. G. Groeninger, m the United States. The customary cott-% gratulations were offered.
