PRITING TRADES

ANNUAL MEETING HELD "We have 785 male and four female workers, excluding members on military service." stated the annual report of the Auckland branch of Now Zealand Printing and Related Trades Union,' presented to members last night. By postal ballot, Mr. J. Cardwell was re-elected president for the fourth vear in succession, the voting being 3&9 to 94. Mr. Cardwell is also national president of the union, having been appointed to that position last August. ' "Trade, particularly in the commercial printing houses, has been brisk throughout the period under review," states the report. As a result, very few members .suffered unemployment for any great length of time. The notable exception was provided by linotype operators, where unemployment had been unpleasantly severe. Two conciliation council sittings had been held, but little headway was made. After the declaration of war, the parties had met and adjusted a few of the points in dispute. Owing to the uncertainty of the position, however, it was agreed to adjourn, but it was optional for either side to call another sitting at anv time.
