GIRL AT PORT OF CALL marriage at short notice BRIDEGROOM MISSES SHIP [from our own- correspondent] HAMILTON, "Wednesday The marriage of Private Wilbur Clifford Welch, aged 21, the son of Mr. and Mrs. H. Welch, of Grey Street, Hamilton, took place during' short leave in a port of call on the voyage to England. Private Welch, who was born in .Hamilton, and is a well-known racing cyclist, loft New Zealand with the second echelon, and was 011 leave when he met a pretty girl. Miss Mary Kathleen Mack, at the Church of England refreshment rooms, where lie and other New Zealanders were being entertained.

While in tho refreshment rooms. Private Welch was told that the departure of his boat*had been postponed. The information proved to be incorrect, and he missed the boat. In the meantime he had been taken to the girl's home and had become engaged to her. He consulted the denirof the local cathedral, who undertook to see that Welch could join another transport.

A special licence was obtained, and the marriage took place in the local cathedral, the dean officiating. The bridegroom left on a transport on the day following his marriage, and is now in England. His wife remained at home.
