GOLF IN AMERICA
little wins championship FERRIER AMATEUR FAVOURITE After tying with Gene Sarazen, Lawson Little won the United Stats? open golf championship at the difficult Cleveland links Inst week, with 70 to 73, in the play-off. Little took tho lend at tho first hole and was never headed for the remainder of tho round. E. Oliver, who, with Sarazen and Little, had 287 to lead after 72 holes, was disqualified for starting: beforo his official time, thereby avoiding some rain. •Tim Fcrrier, who finished equal 20th with 300, was equal second amateur. Fcrriers last two rounds of 41, 37 —78 and 38, 37—75 brought his total to 13 over par for tho 72 holes. He thus lost the amateur medal to Wilford Wchrle, with 297. . Sain Snead had an excellent chance of a win, but went astray completely in tho last 18, shooting 81 for 295. , „ . ' Fcrrier was apparently suffering from tho pressure of tho final days, and got into all sorts of troublo from the tee to the green. His worst hole was tho sixth, where he sliced into tho rough, and then his practico swing accidentally tip'ied tho ball for six feet, thus shooting three from the- rough. Ho said. "Sorry I could not do better, but tho breaks did not come." Fcrrier has an excellent chanco of annexing the American amateur championship, to be contested in September, says a Melbourne writer. His rounds in the open indicate he is not far short of his best form, and, as ho is considered by American critics to be a great recovery player, and one who can score a birdie after a bad hole, he is certainly a favourite among the championship prophets.
