BOXING CONTEST

MATCH ON MONDAY NIGHT HUTCHINSON AND GILDO Regarded by his manager, Mr. C. Lucas, as the fastest and most spectacular fighter he has over handled, the American negro lightweight, Johnnie Hutchinson, will meet Young Gildo at the Town Hall on Monday night Hutchinson's perfectly-timed punches and brilliant defensivo work enabled him to beat the best in the light-weight class in Australia, and ho is very anxious to meet Gildo again. He considers the Filipino to be a crafty and most dangerous opponent. Out of 28 contests in Australia, Hutchinson was bcaton on only •three occasions, one of these being a points defeat by Gildo. The bout was keenly contested from start to finish, and the pair had tho crowd keyed up to a high pitch of excitement until the final gong. As Hutchinson already had a close points decision over Gildo. his defeat left honours even, and Monday's contest, therefore, is more than usually important to both boxers. Tho bout will bo of 12 threc-minuto rounds, and a good amateur programme will provide the preliminary entertainment. DOMINION CHAMPIONSHIPS ABANDONMENT THIS SEASON [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION] WELLINGTON, Wednesday The New Zealand boxing championships, which were to have been held in Auckland in August, have been abandoned owing to tho war situation. This decision was made at last night's meeting of the New Zealand Boxing .Council. Members felt that, in tho present \ircumstances, it was inadvisable to proceod with the tournament. Tho view was also expressed that the winning of titles in the absence of boxers serving with the forces would not carry the usual importance. Tne council accepted the generous offer of the secretary, Mr. G. P. Aldrulge, to have his salary reduced by £SO.
