ALARM VOICED
SUBVERSIVE ELEMENTS SPREAD TO EDUCATION SEARCHING INQUIRY URGED Alarm at the growth of Communistic and subversive elements which, it was stated, have spread through the education system, was expressed by members of the Auckland Education Board at a meeting yesterday. Mr. F. A. Snell said lie noticed with pleasure regulations dealing with subversive statements but ho thought the board, which was charged with the duty of noticing the effect of the country's education policy,. should deal with the matter in a different way.
"This thing has spread through the education system; inquiries should bo made as to its source and how it is being spread," said Mr. Snell, "I am not casting any reflection on the majority of our teachers, who are loyal. Communism is out to destroy Christianity. It is unfair that taxpayers should have to feed this subversive element." That the board did receive complaints but never any substantial information on which it could act, was pointed out by the chairman, Mr. W. J. Campbell. He suggested that such cases should bo handed over to the police for investigation.
"This board is very gravely concerned at the alarming .increase in Communistic activities in this country and urges the Government as a precautionary measure immediately to take steps to close the door to the Civil Service to anyone taking part in such organisations, and, further, to make the most searching inquiry as to why it is possible for this movement to make such rapid growth and to ascertain the source from which it is fed, was the wording of a motion proposed by Mr. Snell, seconded by Mr. G. E. Spooner, and carried unanimously. Neglect on the part of several schools to comply with the by-laws and fly the Union Jack on occasions was mentioned by Mr. J. E. JMliott, and members pointed to it as possible evidence of subversive elements. It was decided to inform those in charge of the schools of the necessity for flying the flag on appropriate occasions.
