BOLTS AND NUTS
IMPORT CONDITIONS CHANGE IN ALLOCATIONS Conditions under the fourth period import plan for the importation of nuts and bolts have now been amended, according to information received by importers. When the plan was first announced, varying allocations Ave re made under three classifications of nuts and bolts, but now there will be one classification only. Based on 1938 imports, there will be no cut on United Kingdom supplies, a 50_ per cent cut on those from other British countries, and a complete ban in respect of foreign countries. It is explained by importers that when the schedule was originally prepared, preparations were in hand in Wellington for the manufacture of nuts and bolts of certain sizes. They were in the hands of a company formed by large Melbourne and Wellington engineering interests. The original fourth period allocations were designed to assist the new industry, but production has been delayed because of difficulties in securing plant and materials. The change now made in import conditions represents a return to. those ruling iin the third period.
BAN ON COOOBEANS NON-STERLING COUNTRIES The issue of further fourth period licences to import cocobeans from countries having a non-sterling currency will no longer bo made, according to advice received by Auckland merchants. The ban chiefly affects manufacturers of chocolates. "Wo can accept it as a necessary war measure," said one manufacturer. "It will cut out supplies from American countries, but, subject to shipping difficulties, we ought to be able to obtain sufficient stocks from the African Gold Coast, Ceylon and Trinidad.
