SERVICE OVERSEAS
HOSPITAL SUPERINTENDENT DR. J. W. CRAVEN CALLED UP NOTICE FROM WAR OFFICE The medical superintendent of the Auckland Hospital, Dr. J. W. Craven, has received instructions from the War Office, London, to report overseas for service with the Koyal Army Medical Corps. Dr. Craven, who has the rank of lieutenant-colonel, was granted extended leave of absence by the Hospital Board last night, and he expect? to leave New ZealaiKj'ear-ly next month. Dr. Craven, who has been superintendent at the hospital 'since I£:V2. has a distinguished Great War record. With the rank of captain iie went to France in April, 1915, with the Ist Xorthunihria Field Ambulance, commanding the tield
ambulance in the latter stages, of the war and returning from active servic-a in June, 1919, as lieutenant-colonel. When he came to New Zealand in 1926 he was transferred to the reserve of the Royal Army Medical Corps. During his war service Dr. Craven was awarded the Military Cross and the Croix do Chevalier of the Legion of Honour. In- granting Dr. Craven leave of absence for the duration 'of his war service, the Hospital Board extended congratulations and good wishes to him. Members agreed that, while they-were most reluctant to lose his services, tne instructions from the Imperial Aimy authorities left them with no alternative. The question of appointing an acting-superintendent during D r - Craven's absence will be the subject of a report to the board by the chairman, Mr. Allan J. Moody.
