RELIEF OF DISTRESS

WORK IN THE CITY A decision to continue the practice of establishing and maintaining reserves above the sums required for immediate distribution was made at tho annual meeting of the Auckland Metropolitan Unemployment Belief Committee. The chairman, Sir Ernest Davis, said it was gratifying to realise that the call on the fund for the assistance of cases of social distress had been light as compared with past years when tho economic position was perhaps not so favourable as during last year. It had been found that the call on local funds had not been excessive, due in a largo measure to the assistance received under the Social Security Act. Tho committee had started the year with a surplus of £BBB7 and revenue had totalled LWm. of which approximately £9OOO had been received as allocations from art union funds. The expenditure had been £BllB, and the year closed will) n balance of £10,765. An executive committee consisting of Sir Ernest Davis, as chairman, the Mayor of Mount Albert. Mr. H. A. Anderson, the Mn.vor of Mount Kdcn, Mr, R. J. Mills. Consignor IT. E. ITolhrook and the Rev. T. Halliday was appointed. The chairman paid a tribute to the excellent work done hy Moiisignor Holbrook and Mr. Halliday.
