STOCKS AND SHARES

THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE FIRMER TONE TOWARD CLOSE A slightly stronger tone ruled on the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday. Values early ill the day were depressed, but there was a general improvement later. Support for Government loans was inclined to ease. Banks generally were stronger, but insurances sold freely at steady to lower levels. Most of the Australian industrials closed slightly higher, although buying support in some cases was only slight. New Zealand issues were steady. Breweries opened at a decline on last week, but the ground was recovered at the close.
