POSTAGE CENTENNIAL
FINE BRITISH COLLECTION [by telegraph —OWN correspondent] WELLINGTON, Tuesday To mark the centennial this month of the use of postage stamps, a remarkable display of early British stamps is on show at the Dominion Museum. This is the collection. presented to the Christchurcli Philatelic Society by the late Mr. Claude Ferrier. It formed his life work, is valued £IOOO, and is considered the finest collection of British stamps in New Zealand. . ; The display comprises half, a dozen cases, and represents all but the very rarest issues of stamps of Great Britain. It includes a number of very remarkable specimens, including a notable copy of the orange £5 stamp, of which only 407 were issued. This stamp is the highest denomination printed in Great Britain; it appeared in 3882 and was withdrawn at the end of Queen Victoria's reign. The use of postage stamps dates back to 1840. In the previous year Sir Rowland Hill's scheme for penny postage was instituted by Act of Parliament and it -was brought into force on May 1, when printed letter sheets and envelopes were issued. They were first used on May 6, 1840.
