SEASON FOR OPOSSUMS
PERIOD OF TWO MONTHS An open season for the trapping of opossums, lasting two months, will bo hold in tho Auckland acclimatisation district from noon 011 July 1 to noon on September 1, according to an announcement made by the Government. The last local open season was held in 1937, when the Government received royalty on more than 15,000 skins. Orchardists and residents in certain areas arc able to trap continuously, but prices in recent months have not been sufficiently attractive and the practice has almost ceased. Many orchardists' trap the animals because they destroy fruit on tho trees. War conditions make it impossible to forecast prices, but according to the local office of the firm whose JDunedin branch auctions nearly all the skins from tlie Auckland Province, the indications favour profitable rates. Provided the prices expected are gained, as good a season as in 1937 is anticipated. There are two species of opossums in the Auckland Province. The black and brown types are to be found in the Potorua' and Karangahako districts, while tho blue and grey varieties inhabit the regions within a 30-miles radius of the city. The latter are also to be found on Pangitoto and lvawau Islands.
